Duke York
Biography
Duke York was an American actor and stuntman whose screen career ran from 1932 to 1952 and took in close to 160 films. He was born in Danby, New York, and also went by the name Duke Owl. Modern viewers know him best for the grotesque monsters, ape men and frightening goon figures he played in short films starring the Three Stooges, among them Three Little Twirps, Idle Roomers, Three Pests in a Mess, Shivering Sherlocks and Who Done It? Away from those creature parts, he took the part of Kelly in Higher Than a Kite, and he also played King Kala in Flash Gordon (1936), a serial. During the 1930s he was employed by the actress Ida Lupino, serving as both her lifeguard and her bodyguard. He died in 1952.
