Bob Nolan

Biography

Bob Nolan was a Canadian-born American who sang, wrote songs, and acted. He helped establish the Sons of the Pioneers and wrote Western and country songs, including Cool Water and Tumbling Tumbleweeds. Leonard Slye, later Roy Rogers, hired him in 1931. In 1934 Nolan, Slye, and Tim Spencer started the Sons of the Pioneers, which recorded for Columbia, Decca, and RCA Victor. His film work began that same year, supplying the singing for Ken Maynard in In Old Santa Fe. He played second lead in Charles Starrett westerns for Columbia. Nolan appeared in at least 88 Westerns, later with Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, and had guest roles in Hollywood Canteen, Rhythm on the Range, and Disney's Melody Time. From 1941 he backed Rogers at Republic Pictures through 1948, the last film together being Night Time in Nevada. He retired in 1949, recorded with the group again in 1956, and joined the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.

Big break
In September 1931, Nolan replied to a Los Angeles Herald-Examiner classified ad seeking a yodeler for an old-time act, with a tenor preferred. Leonard Slye, who later became Roy Rogers, led The Rocky Mountaineers and hired Nolan right after hearing him sing and yodel.
First role
Nolan's film career started in 1934, when he provided the singing voice for Ken Maynard in In Old Santa Fe.
