Plot summary
Chester Wooley and Duke Egan work as traveling salesmen and are bound for California. Their trip brings them to Wagon Gap, Montana. While they are in town, a notorious criminal named Fred Hawkins is murdered. The town holds Chester and Duke answerable for the killing. A local law says that the person who survives a gun duel takes on the dead man's debts and family. Widow Hawkins and her seven children now depend on Chester.

- While making The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap, Lou Costello dedicated a youth center in memory of his son; days later his father died of a heart attack, and Costello blamed agent Eddie Sherman, fired him, and the team went two years with no agent.
- Bill Bowers and Buc Beauchamp's story, which the film was based on, rested on a real Montana law holding that a man who killed someone became responsible for that person's widow and children.
- The first issue of the Abbott and Costello comic book, published by St. John in February 1948, adapted the film, and of the forty issues printed through 1956 it was the only one taken from one of their movies.
- Bill Bowers and Buc Beauchamp worked on the story for two hours, picturing it as a vehicle for James Stewart and Marjorie Main, and sold it to Universal for $2,500.
