Selena Royle

Biography

Selena Royle was an American actress whose career took in the stage, radio, television and film, and who later wrote books. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the playwright Edwin Milton Royle, who wrote Lancelot and Elaine for Broadway in 1921 so that she and her sister could make their professional debuts. Royle studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Art, appeared with the Theatre Guild in Peer Gynt in 1923 and built a reputation on Broadway. She started in radio in the 1920s and played the title part in Hilda Hope, M.D. In the 1940s she returned to the screen, usually as mothers: the bereaved mother in The Fighting Sullivans (1944), Jane Powell's mother in A Date with Judy (1948) and the mother of Ingrid Bergman's Joan in Joan of Arc (1948). She also appeared on early television and wrote books and cookbooks. Her final film was Murder Is My Beat (1955).
