Plot summary
Dave Hirsh published two books before the war and has been away from Parkman, Indiana, for sixteen years. He left without keeping in touch with his older brother Frank, who placed him in a charity boarding school as a boy while Frank and his wife Agnes began their marriage. Frank now owns a jewelry store, serves on a bank board and watches the town's opinion of him. Dave drinks at Smitty's, where the gambler Bama Dillert pulls him into poker. Ginny Moorhead came with Dave from Chicago and decides to stay; her former boyfriend, the Chicago gangster Raymond Lanchak, follows her. Agnes resents Dave, while Gwen French, a creative writing teacher, asks to meet him because she admires his writing.

- Shirley MacLaine reported that while Some Came Running shot in and around Madison, Indiana, Frank Sinatra was so besieged by local women that one broke through a rope barrier and flung herself at him as her husband ran to stop her.
- MGM bought the screen rights to James Jones' novel in early 1957, before the book was even published, in what was called "an enormous deal": the asking price was $1 million, and the final figure, though lower, was far above the $82,500 Columbia Pictures had paid Jones for From Here to Eternity.
- Frank Sinatra approved Dean Martin for the role of Bama, and Some Came Running became the first film the two men made together.
