Plot summary

In 1845 Louisiana, Phoebe Ann Naylor is about to marry Don Andrea Baldazar, El Duce de la Casala, when Yancy Cottle and his relatives arrive as a U.S. Dragoons troop led by Cottle's cousin, Captain Rodney Stimpson. Yancy wants Phoebe for himself and challenges Andrea to a duel, and Andrea leaves the territory promising to meet Phoebe across the river in Texas, which is not yet a state. Phoebe is sent to Texas to wait out the scandal. Sam Hollis, who works as a trek guide, and Kronk, his Indian companion, take Andrea on as an extra escort for a job, since the Army will not send soldiers until Texas joins the Union. On the trail the two men clash over their different customs, and they rescue the Indian maiden Lonetta from a Comanche medicine man.
