Plot summary
Carrie and Anna Berniers are unmarried sisters who share a house in New Orleans, and their brother Julian comes home with a young wife, Lily Prine. Expensive gifts arrive with the couple. Both sisters have been hoping Julian will cover some of their expenses, and a trip to Europe that the two of them have long wanted comes up again in the talk. Julian says that the factory he owned has gone out of business, but that he managed to save money. Neither sister believes him. Carrie's attention has always been fixed on her brother, and she is jealous of the bride he has brought into the house.
