Plot summary
Danny Ocean and Jimmy Foster served together in the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. They recruit nine men from their old unit for a single job: taking the money from five Las Vegas casinos. The plan is worked out like a military operation. Josh Howard drives a garbage truck, other men take jobs in the hotels, and Sam Harmon sings in one of the lounges. Demolition charges are set at a transmission tower, and the emergency wiring in each casino is rewired so that the generators open the cashier cages. The night chosen is New Year's Eve.

- According to Frank Sinatra Jr., the Rat Pack members were performing shows at 8pm and midnight during production, so much of the Las Vegas location footage was shot between 3am and dawn.
- Peter Lawford learned the film's premise from director Gilbert Kay, who had heard the idea from a filling station attendant, and bought the rights in 1958 with William Holden in mind for the lead.
