Pete Postlethwaite

Biography

Pete Postlethwaite was an English character actor from Warrington who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before beginning his career in stage and minor television roles. His first significant film success was Terence Davies's Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), and he broke through in Hollywood when he took the part of David in Alien 3 (1992). For playing Giuseppe Conlon in In the Name of the Father (1993), he received an Academy Award nomination. He then appeared in The Usual Suspects (1995), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Brassed Off (1996), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), The Constant Gardener (2005), and Inception (2010). On television he portrayed Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill in the Sharpe series. He acted with the Royal Shakespeare Company between 1981 and 1987. Steven Spielberg regarded him as the world's best actor, and he was named an OBE in 2004. His supporting turn in The Town (2010) earned a posthumous BAFTA nomination.

Postlethwaite's first agent and his peers urged him to change his surname, joking that theaters could not afford the electricity to put it up in lights, but he refused.
A change of course
Before becoming an actor, Postlethwaite studied physical education and drama at St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, and there he was the first male drama teacher.
