Trailer

Plot summary

Homicide detective Harley Stone still carries the wound he took three years ago, when his partner Foster was killed, and his commanding officer says he survives on anxiety, coffee and chocolate. The killings have resumed, and the case consumes him. His superiors order rookie officer Dick Durkin, an Oxford-educated psychologist, to remain with him constantly and to report any unstable behavior. In 2008, global warming and heavy rainfall have flooded large areas of London. The murders appear tied to the lunar cycle, and an organ is missing from every victim. Michelle, who was married to Foster and had an affair with Stone, returns to the city.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Split Second (1992)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Wendy Carlos, the composer behind the scores for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Tron, was originally hired to score Split Second, but her work was rejected and replaced; two of her unused tracks, meant for the film's morgue scene, later surfaced on her compilation album Rediscovering Lost Scores, Volume 2.
  • Screenwriter Gary Scott Thompson's original 1988 script, titled Pentagram, was set in modern Los Angeles and featured a ritualistic serial killer who committed five murders every five years and left pentagram symbols at each scene. It was reworked partly because it was seen as too close to another horror thriller, The First Power (1990).
  • Gary Scott Thompson originally wrote the script with Harrison Ford in mind for the main role, but the new version was sent to Rutger Hauer, who loved it and agreed to star; Thompson said he was happy Hauer was cast as the lead.
  • Special effects artist Stephen Norrington was given just three weeks to design the film's monster after the filmmakers went back and forth on what the creature should look like.
  • Director Tony Maylam stepped away before the film was finished due to production stress, and co-director Ian Sharp took over to shoot the finale in a flooded subway station along with several other scenes.
  • Belgian grindcore band Aborted used an image taken from the film as the cover art for their debut album, The Purity of Perversion, released in 1999.
