Plot summary
In 1991 Jimmy Riley comes upon a ring at the wreckage of a crashed B-17 outside Belfast. The inscription names Ethel and Teddy, and he sets out to return it to the woman it belonged to, which leads him to Michigan, where Ethel Ann lives. Years earlier she had fallen in love with Teddy Gordon, a young farmer building a house with his friends Jack and Chuck, while her parents assumed she was seeing Chuck. Days after the attack on Pearl Harbor she accepted Teddy's gold ring and the two married informally, with Jack and Chuck as witnesses.
