Plot summary
In Yackandandah, a small Australian town, Vince runs the local cinema and several other businesses, but tax troubles after his ex-wife got everything leave him struggling. A new government tax benefit for same-sex couples gives him an idea. He persuades Ralph, his best friend and the town mechanic, to file papers saying they are a couple living together. Vince assures him their small town will never find out, and Ralph agrees. A careless mail delivery person lets the postmaster see the application, and word spreads before the men know it. The same letter also says a government investigator will visit to check their claim. To prepare, Vince and Ralph take lessons in acting like a gay couple from hairdresser Eric and travel to Sydney, where they spend time at a gay nightclub.
