Plot summary
In 1757, with the French and Indian War under way, the Mohican Chingachgook, his son Uncas and his adopted son Hawkeye travel the upstate New York wilderness. At a friend's farm they learn that the British Army wants the colonial militia folded into its fight against the French and their native allies. Major Duncan Heyward is assigned to escort Colonel Edmund Munro's daughters Cora and Alice to Fort William Henry, where their father commands. Heyward proposes to Cora, who asks for more time. Their guide, a Huron named Magua posing as a Mohawk ally, leads the party and its soldiers into an ambush. The three Mohicans, tracking the war party, strike back and agree to take Cora, Alice and Heyward to the fort.

- In preparation for his role, Daniel Day-Lewis and Michael Mann took part in weeks of wilderness training with US Army Special Forces personnel, where Day-Lewis learned to use period weapons, start fires, and hunt and skin game.
- The set of Fort William Henry was constructed at a reported cost of US$6 million on felled forestry land adjacent to Lake James in North Carolina, and Highway 126, which ran between the set and the lake, had to be closed for the duration of the filming.
- Oglala Lakota activist, musician and writer Russell Means made his film-acting debut as Chingachgook, and during filming he lobbied for the 175 Native American extras to receive better pay and improved lodging conditions.
- Michael Mann was said to be "fanatical about the details", causing tension among cast and crew, and the project had seen several composers, an editor, and costume designer James Acheson walk off production.

The film heavily distorts the aftermath of the fort's massacre, falsely showing French General Montcalm approving the ambush and staging the brutal execution of British Colonel Munro, who historically survived the conflict entirely.
