Plot summary
It is 1812, and the army of General Wellesley is poised to cross from Portugal into Spain. Ciudad Rodrigo has fallen, and Colonel Lawford, badly wounded, gives up command of the South Essex, which costs Sharpe an influential friend. Colonel Windham arrives with his own officers, so Sharpe is reduced to lieutenant and put in charge of the baggage, and the Light Company goes to an officer who bought his commission. Among the reinforcements is Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, whom Sharpe has known since India and counts an enemy. Teresa, Sharpe's lover, brings word that their baby daughter is living with her family in Badajoz, the next stronghold the army must take.
