Tony Haygarth

Biography

Tony Haygarth was an English actor who worked extensively in television, film and theater. Born in Liverpool, he moved from amateur and repertory work into the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He made his film debut in Percy (1971) and became a familiar face in police and historical dramas and sitcoms, often cast as down-to-earth characters. His television roles included PC Wilmot in Rosie from 1977 to 1981, Milo Renfield in Dracula (1979), the title part in Kinvig (1981), and Vic Snow in Where the Heart Is from 1997 to 2002. He appeared in Sharpe's Enemy (1994) and Sharpe's Justice (1997), and his film work included Chicken Run (2000) and Fakers. On stage he earned nominations for Laurence Olivier Theatre Awards for The Tempest and Twelve Angry Men in 1996, received the Clarence Derwent Award for Simpatico (1995), and wrote several plays.

Haygarth studied the Dark Lady of Shakespeare's Sonnets, an unnamed figure. After examining a Nicholas Hilliard portrait called Mistress Holland, he decided it showed Emilia Lanier, one possible identity for that woman.
