Plot summary
A history teacher at a Pittsburgh high school in 1974, Tom Crick has trouble connecting with his class, and at home Mary, his wife, is beginning to lose her sanity and longs for the son the couple never had. Worried about her, Crick changes how he teaches and starts narrating his own life to his students, weaving in three generations of his family. The lessons return him to the Fens of England during the war, to his widowed father Henry and his older brother Dick. Crick's mother had been a nurse in a manor converted into a psychiatric hospital, where she met Henry. One of his students, Matthew Price, is anxious about the future.
