Plot summary
Jim Hawkins and his widowed mother keep the Admiral Benbow inn, where the lodger Billy Bones keeps watch for a one-legged man. The pirate Black Dog fights Bones at the inn and retreats, and Blind Pew brings Bones the Black Spot before Bones dies. Jim and his mother open Bones' chest looking for the rent he owes them, and Jim takes a packet of papers that holds Captain Flint's map to £700,000 buried on an island. Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney take the papers, and Trelawney procures the Hispaniola. Jim goes aboard as cabin boy, and Trelawney hires the one-legged publican Long John Silver as cook, who brings friends of his own as sailors. Captain Smollett, wary of the crew, makes plans in case of mutiny.

- The Hispaniola in the film was portrayed by the sailing ship Bounty, which had originally been built for Mutiny on the Bounty and was set to be destroyed at the end of that film until Marlon Brando protested. In October 2012 the Bounty sank off the coast of the Carolinas during Hurricane Sandy.
