Plot summary
Garfield leads a pampered indoor life with Odie, a beagle, and Jon Arbuckle, the man who keeps them. Looking for a snack one night, he and Odie are taken by Roland, a Shar Pei, and Nolan, a Whippet, and left in an abandoned mall. Vic, the father Garfield has not seen since kittenhood, turns up and sets them free. Garfield blames him for leaving him in an alley. Jinx, a white Persian cat, holds a grudge against Vic over a milk theft at Lactose Farms that left her behind. She promises to forgive him if he, Garfield, and Odie bring her a large amount of milk while Roland and Nolan watch. Vic then leads the two toward the farm.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Garfield Movie (2024)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Hannah Waddingham sang a musical number, "I'm Back", as Jinx, but did not record it until after the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. By then the crew had run out of time to animate the sequence, so the song was cut from The Garfield Movie, though it plays over the end credits with parts of its animatic.
- Chris Pratt was director Mark Dindal's first choice to voice Garfield in The Garfield Movie. Dindal felt Pratt's natural voice carried Garfield's laziness and sarcasm, and the animators tested the fit by pairing his voice with snippets of the cat's dialogue.
- Animation supervisor Karun Reddy said DNEG's team aimed to carry the comic's 2D look into 3D, calling fur and exaggerated animation their hardest technical problem. Character rigs were built with "multiple arms, legs and eyes" for wilder poses, using "classic Garfield shapes" from the strips as reference.
