Plot summary
Drought has left the United States crumbling and people killing for water. Ernest Holm stays on a small farm with his son Jerome and his daughter Mary, the last family in the area, because he believes irrigation will make the land grow again. His wife Katherine is in a hospital after an accident. Ernest earns the family's water by hauling supplies for the water men, whose government-backed monopoly covers water from deep wells. After his mule breaks its legs, he buys a robotic carrier called Sim, outbidding Flem Lever, who has been seeing Mary without his consent.
