Plot summary
Hannah Faber, a smokejumper, is stationed at a fire lookout tower in Montana's Park County after she failed to prevent deaths in a forest fire. In Jacksonville, Florida, forensic accountant Owen Casserly learns that his boss, a district attorney, and the man's family died in what looks like a gas explosion. He believes they were contract killings and that he is next, so he takes his son Connor and drives toward Montana, where his brother-in-law Ethan Sawyer works as a deputy sheriff. Two assassins force them off the road. Owen hands Connor evidence against the assassins' employer before the boy flees. Hannah, whose radio equipment is knocked out by lightning, comes across Connor during a patrol and brings him back to the tower to call for help.
