Plot summary
At Hawthorn, a restaurant on a private island, the celebrity chef Julian Slowik cooks for a small party of guests. Tyler Ledford, a foodie, has brought Margot Mills as his date. Around the table sit the critic Lillian Bloom and Ted Feldman, her editor, the regulars Richard and Anne Liebrandt, the movie star George Diaz with his assistant Felicity Lynn, Soren, Dave and Bryce, who are employed by Slowik's investor Doug Verrick, and Slowik's mother Linda. Elsa, the maître d'hôtel, leads the tour and remarks that Margot is not the guest Tyler originally invited. Slowik sends out course after course, each more unsettling than the one before, and the third arrives on tortillas laser-etched with uncomfortable truths about the people at the table.

- Will Tracy dined at Cornelius Sjømatrestaurant, an island restaurant outside Bergen in Norway, during a honeymoon, and later suggested a story to Seth Reiss inspired by the experience.
- The fictional restaurant Hawthorn satirised several real fine-dining restaurants: the stylised desserts at Alinea, the goodie bag of granola at Eleven Madison Park, the catching of the restaurant's own fish at Fäviken, the "Scandi severity" of Noma and the remote island location of the Willows Inn.
- Several figures from fine dining consulted on the film, including chef Dominique Crenn, who recreated dishes from her San Francisco restaurant Atelier Crenn for the fictional Hawthorn, and second unit director David Gelb, brought in to recreate the filmmaking style of his Netflix docuseries Chef's Table.
- Emma Stone and Ralph Fiennes were announced as the stars in April 2019, but Stone left over commitments to other projects; Anya Taylor-Joy entered negotiations in June 2021 and was confirmed in July as her replacement.
