Plot summary
Kal-El, sent to Earth from the destroyed planet Krypton, works as Clark Kent, a reporter for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. As Superman he intervenes in a war between the neighboring nations of Boravia and Jarhanpur, stopping the invasion and telling Boravia's president, Vasil Ghurkos, to leave Jarhanpur be. The metahuman known as the Hammer of Boravia then defeats him in Metropolis, and he withdraws to the Fortress of Solitude in Antarctica with Krypto, his superpowered dog. The Engineer, a nanotech-powered ally of the billionaire Lex Luthor, follows him there. Robots heal him with concentrated solar radiation and play a damaged recording left by Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, his parents from Krypton, of which only the first half can be heard. Lois Lane, a reporter and his girlfriend, questions him about the ethics of his actions abroad.

- Bassem Youssef said his character, reportedly Rumaan Harjadi, the leader of a fictional Middle Eastern country, was removed from the script, and he believed it was because of his October 2023 comments criticizing the Israeli government. James Gunn disputed this, saying Youssef was never formally offered the part and the character was cut before those comments were made.
- James Gunn said one of Henry Cavill's original DCEU Superman suits, already in poor condition, was used for screen tests: Tom Brittney "messed it up" and David Corenswet, too tall for it, tore it to shreds.
- An 11-foot Superman statue modeled on David Corenswet hung at the top of the Shard in London on July 1, 2025, urging pedestrians to "Look Up"; it was the largest public sculpture ever displayed in the United Kingdom and took four months to craft.
- In January 2025 the estate of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster sued Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), claiming distribution rights in the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada had reverted to it. - James Gunn said Krypto was inspired by his own dog Ozu, adopted soon after he began writing Superman; wondering how difficult life would be if Ozu had superpowers brought Krypto into the script and changed the shape of the story.
- Nicholas Hoult, the runner-up to play Batman in The Batman (2022), was eyed for Lex Luthor but chose to audition for Superman instead, feeling he could play Luthor well but insisting on focusing on Superman.
- The Fortress of Solitude scenes were shot over one week in the Adventdalen valley in Svalbard, Norway; James Gunn chose it for its natural beauty and its similarity to Antarctica, where the Fortress is meant to be.
