Plot summary
After his mother's death, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and his brother Hilary come under the care of Father Francis, who arranges their lodging with a wealthy woman in Birmingham. Her other ward is Edith Bratt, a pianist Tolkien admires and comes to love. At school his gift for languages sets him apart, and a fight with a rival classmate, Robert Gilson, leads the headmaster to order the two boys to keep each other's company for the term; the punishment becomes a friendship that widens to include Geoffrey Smith and Christopher Wiseman. Father Francis, seeing Tolkien's grades suffer, forbids him from courting Edith while he remains a ward. At Oxford, Tolkien struggles until Professor Joseph Wright draws him toward philology, and when the First World War begins, he and his friends enlist.
