Plot summary
Bernard Garrett brings his wife and son to Los Angeles in 1954, hoping to build a career in real estate. Racism stands in his way. He buys a building from Patrick Barker, an Irish immigrant, and renovates it with his cousin and the cousin's friend Matt Steiner, a white man. Barker proposes a partnership: they buy and fix up buildings together, with Barker as the acceptable face. Garrett then takes Joe Morris, a wealthy club owner, as his co-investor. The pair hire Matt to pose as the head of their company at meetings, and they coach him in real estate investing. The partners acquire properties across Los Angeles and rent and sell to black families in neighborhoods that had been segregated.
