Plot summary
Dave Spritz reads the weather on a Chicago news program, though he has no meteorological training. The job pays well but earns him little respect. His father, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Spritzel, is disappointed that Dave cannot grow up and handle his two children. Dave is separated from his wife, Noreen; their daughter, Shelly, is bullied at school, and their son, Mike, has just left rehab. A weatherman opening on the national morning show Hello America could nearly quadruple his salary, but the job is in New York City. Robert, meanwhile, learns he has lymphoma, and Dave takes up archery to steady his nerves.
