Plot summary
In rural Victoria, young Ned Kelly watches his father, Red Kelly, an Irishman exiled to Van Diemen's Land, clash once more with the colonial police. Red is imprisoned and dies when Ned is twelve. Ned, a boy who once dived into a river to rescue a drowning child, finds evidence that his father cross-dressed during his outlaw raids. His mother Ellen keeps the family going by running a shebeen, granting sexual favors to Sergeant O'Neill and taking a series of lovers, among them the bushranger Harry Power. Power makes Ned his apprentice and teaches him the land, its hiding places and the ways of bushranging.
