Plot summary
Terry Husk is a veteran FBI agent who has worked Ku Klux Klan and Cosa Nostra cases. He wants a lighter caseload and takes charge of the empty field office in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, hoping his estranged wife and daughter will reconnect with him. In Spokane, Washington, Bob Mathews and three other men rob a Washington Mutual branch. Deputy Jamie Bowen tells Husk that Walter West, an Aryan Nations member gone missing for weeks, had said the group was counterfeiting money. FBI agent Joanne Carney reports a failed bomb found at a pornography shop in Spokane.

- At director Justin Kurzel's request, Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult each spent a day surreptitiously tailing the other so the actors could get a feel for the discipline of surveillance for the film.
- During preparation, director Justin Kurzel wrote manifestos for each main character, detailing their motivations and daily routines, and encouraged Nicholas Hoult to not smoke or drink to mirror Bob Matthews' known habits.
