Plot summary
Orphaned as a child when her telekinetic powers surfaced in a car crash, Jean Grey grows up at Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where he teaches her to control her abilities. In 1992, a burst of energy like a solar flare damages the space shuttle Endeavour, and the president calls on the X-Men to rescue the crew. The team saves the astronauts; Jean takes the energy into herself to save their aircraft. She survives, her psychic powers greatly amplified and much harder to control, and the mental blocks Xavier placed on her childhood memories begin to give way. Back at the school, her emotional state deteriorates, and during a celebration she loses control of her powers.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Dark Phoenix (2019)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Dark Phoenix is the first main X-Men film that does not involve Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It was also the last made by Bad Hat Harry Productions, which went uncredited after sexual assault allegations against Bryan Singer.
- Deadline Hollywood said Dark Phoenix lost $133 million once marketing and distribution costs were counted, which made it one of the biggest box-office bombs ever.
- The film was initially planned as a two-film story, but the studio decided to produce only one film with the prequel cast because new management did not want more X-Men movies set in the past, leading to rewrites such as replacing the Hellfire Club with alien antagonists.
- Concept art revealed that the film originally featured the return of Emma Frost and a new Hellfire Club with members Harry Leland, Friedrich von Roehm, Fenris, Shinobi Shaw, and the Red Lotus gang, but they were replaced with the Skrulls after rewrites and then the D'Bari after reshoots.
- Jennifer Lawrence convinced Simon Kinberg to direct the film and promised to return if he did, despite her dislike of the make-up required for her character Mystique.
