- Writer-director Richard E. Grant's relationship with his producer, Mention-Schaar, was disastrous: he said she sent only five emails in the last two months of pre-production and rarely turned up on set. She also failed to get clearance for the song rights or to film in Swaziland, forcing Grant to meet the King of Swaziland to seek clemency.
- Richard E. Grant had trouble casting his directorial debut: Rachel Weisz, Toni Collette, Meg Ryan, Emmanuelle Béart, Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irons all turned down roles, and Julie Walters became the first actor to sign on.
- Wah-Wah was the first film ever shot in Swaziland, where filming took seven weeks from July 2004, with post-production split between England and France.
- The part of the father in Wah-Wah was written for a younger actor, but when everyone asked in that age range turned it down, the older Gabriel Byrne was given the role.
- Grant wanted the part of Ralph played by two actors, but casting director Celestia Fox insisted on one; he then persuaded her to cast Nicholas Hoult and Zac Fox after noticing their resemblance during casting sessions.
