Plot summary
On a farm in Kinnakee, Kansas, in 1985, eight-year-old Libby Day survives the killings that take her mother and two older sisters. Her testimony sends her teenage brother Ben to prison. Thirty years on, the donations that once supported her have dried up, and Lyle Wirth pays her to speak to his True Crime club, whose members are sure Ben was wrongly convicted. Libby, who still believes him guilty, takes the money and starts reexamining the case, visiting Ben in prison and tracking down the people who surrounded her family: her alcoholic father Runner, Ben's girlfriend Diondra, and Krissi Cates, the girl whose accusations against Ben once shook the household. Flashbacks return to the days before the murders, when Patty Day learns the farm is being foreclosed on and her son keeps company with Trey Teepano, a Satanist bookie.
