Plot summary
A seaplane leaves for China with a disparate group aboard: a nurse, Anne Wesson, leaving a loveless marriage to work with refugees; a woman who means to surprise the son she is estranged from; a wealthy heiress distancing herself from labor troubles; a politician; a moll and a mobster on the run from gangs they crossed; and two rival munitions salesmen hoping to profit from the war. A storm throws the plane off course, it goes down, and the survivors are left in the sea. They wash ashore on a remote island whose only residents are the reclusive Jim Taylor and his servant, Ping. Taylor has a boat and fuel, but he will not say whether he will let them use it.
