Plot summary
In 1877 Wyoming, a peace mission from the U.S. cavalry travels to the Cheyenne. The tribe agrees to leave its hunting grounds so white settlers can move in and search for gold. Colonel Lindsay and the surveyor Josh Tanner run the resettlement, and Chief Broken Hand has pledged to sign a treaty with the government. Tanner befriends the chief's son, Little Dog, and falls for the chief's daughter, Appearing Day, who is Little Dog's sister and already the fiancee of the Cheyenne tribesman American Horse. American Horse is her promised husband and resents the outsider, and the match puts the peace mission at risk.
