Biography

Louis Jean Heydt was an American actor whose film, television, and stage work often cast him as ineffectual or fall-guy characters. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1926 and worked for The New York World as a journalist. A backstage visit to a rehearsal of The Trial of Mary Dugan led to his stage debut playing a reporter, after which he appeared in a dozen plays, including Strictly Dishonorable, Before Morning, and Happy Birthday. In Hollywood he amassed over one hundred film credits; among them were The Great McGinty (1940), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), and John Ford's They Were Expendable (1945), where he played a warm-hearted older soldier. He also supported Charles McGraw in Roadblock (1951) and stayed busy through the decade, making thirty-two films by 1959. He moved into television, appearing as outlaw Tom Horn on Stories of the Century and guest-starring on series like Wagon Train and Maverick.
