Alan Curtis
Biography
Alan Curtis was an American film actor whose career spanned more than 50 movies. He was born in Chicago and worked as a model before Hollywood came calling in the late 1930s. His first screen part was in Winterset (1936). He had a Technicolor role in Hollywood Cavalcade (1939), played a romantic lead in Abbott and Costello's first hit, Buck Privates (1941), and took the part of composer Franz Schubert in The Great Awakening (1941). A memorable turn came in High Sierra (1941). He got a shot at leading-man stardom by replacing John Garfield in Flesh and Fantasy (1943), playing a ruthless killer, though his scenes were cut and later used in Destiny (1944). In Phantom Lady (1944) he was the man framed for murder, and he also played detective Philo Vance. His filmography included more than two dozen features, and in 1960 a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was dedicated to him.
