Plot summary
A coroner and a district attorney question Dr. Carl Fletcher about the death of Paula Dupree, and the doctor recounts how he came to know her. In his account, the gorilla Cheela saves Fred Mason's life at a circus performance. Believing the animal dead, Fletcher obtains the body, detects a heartbeat and brings the creature back. Drawn to it, he buys the estate of the late Dr. Walters, hoping to find the dead man's experimental records. The gorilla turns into a woman, silent at first, a state Fletcher attributes to shock. When his daughter Joan arrives with Bob Whitney, the man she is engaged to, the woman speaks and calls herself Paula. She grows attached to Bob.

- The Breen Office called Edward Dein's script "unacceptable under the provisions of the Production Code by reason of a flavor of bestiality", forcing a meeting with executive producer Will Cowan and Maurice Pivar to tone down the screenplay. The changes made clear Paula Dupree was not nude when changing form.
- Acquanetta said she took the role because she was "assigned to it" and did it "to the best of my ability", but came to feel she "was the property, not the film", which is why she left Universal. The studio never forgave her, as more films in the series were planned.
- The 1944 film re-creates the stalking sequence from Cat People, with Simone Simon stalking Jane Randolph's character down a New York street.
