Plot summary
Norman Reed teaches anthropology, and on a vacation in the South Seas he falls in love with and marries Paula, a woman who was raised on a remote island. He takes her back to the American town where he works, and the community there receives her with suspicion. Illona Carr had believed Norman was meant for her. Paula's voodoo rituals and her belief in the supernatural clash with the rational science her husband practices, and Norman's friends find her strangeness unsettling. Odd incidents begin to occur around the couple, and the gossip and scheming of those around them push Paula to use her magic in defense of herself and her husband.

Evelyn Ankers, whose turn as the scheming Ilona in Weird Woman was the last time Universal cast her as a villain, kept cracking up during takes with co-star Anne Gwynne, who played her on-screen nemesis but was her best friend off-screen.- Director Reginald LeBorg was handed the script on a Friday and told to begin shooting a week from Monday, with the cast filled out shortly before filming; he recalls this rushed schedule was the norm at Universal.
