Hal Baylor

Biography

Hal Baylor was an American boxer who became a character actor in film and television. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he grew up in Oakland, California. He boxed professionally, finishing with 16 wins, 8 losses and 3 draws, and later amassed credits in 76 films and more than 500 television episodes. His acting began in the 1948 boxing picture Joe Palooka in Winner Take All, after the film's star noticed him at a boxing arena. In The Set-Up (1949), his first credited role, he played a mob-controlled fighter opposite Robert Ryan, and reviewers praised the realistic boxing. Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) became his best-remembered film. Adopting the name Hal Baylor in 1952, he was frequently cast as a villain, especially in westerns. His final films appeared in 1975, including A Boy and His Dog, and his last television role came in a 1978 CHiPs episode. He died in 1998.
