Plot summary
Bronislav 'Bronek' Korchinsky has been sending money from sea to Anya, a Polish exile in Cardiff. Arriving to propose, he finds a harbor hooker living in her old flat; the landlord says Anya left weeks ago and owes rent, and Bronek pays the debt to get her new address. Gillie Evans, an orphaned eleven-year-old playing at the dockside, walks with him when he asks the children for directions. Anya tells him to leave; she has taken up with Barclay, a married sportscaster. Gillie hears shouting from the staircase, where she is playing, and sees the killing through a letter box, then takes the revolver that was hidden. Superintendent Graham investigates the death.

- The child witness role was first offered to Colin Petersen, who had been in Smiley; his parents turned it down because they wanted to return to Australia.
