Peter Butterworth
Biography
Peter Butterworth was a British comedian and actor best known for the Carry On films and for playing the Meddling Monk in Doctor Who. Born in Bramhall, Cheshire, he first came to notice in pantomime and made his film debut in Val Guest's William Comes to Town (1948). On television he had a major success in the sketch show How Do You View?, playing the chauffeur Lockitt, and he presented children's programs including Saturday Special and Butterworth Time. His Carry On work began with Carry On Cowboy (1965), and he became known for quiet, eccentric characters, often as a stooge, in films such as Carry On Screaming (1966), Carry On Camping (1969), and Carry On Abroad (1972). He also appeared in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966), The Ritz (1976), Robin and Marian (1976), and The First Great Train Robbery (1978). He died in 1979.

Big break
Butterworth joined the Carry On films partway through the series, playing "Doc" in Carry On Cowboy (1965). His friend Talbot Rothwell, who wrote that film, put him in touch with series creator Peter Rogers.
A role that slipped away
Butterworth was among the vaulters who covered for the escapees shown in the book and film The Wooden Horse. He tried out for the film in 1949, but its makers felt he did not seem heroic or athletic enough.
First role
Butterworth made his first film appearance in William Comes to Town, a 1948 Val Guest film. He and Guest became close friends and later worked together on seven more films.
Big break
Butterworth played the chauffeur Lockitt in the Terry-Thomas sketch show How Do You View?, and this television role was his first major success.

Among the Carry On team, Butterworth ranked sixth in output, with sixteen films, two Christmas specials, the 1975 television series and West End theater productions that toured the country.
