Joan Sims
Biography
Joan Sims was an English actress and comedienne best known for her roles in the Carry On films, appearing in 24 of them, more than any other actress. Born in Basildon in 1930, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1950. Her first film appearance came in Will Any Gentleman? in 1953, followed by Trouble in Store, then The Belles of St Trinian's (1954) and Doctor in the House (1954). She joined the Carry On series with Carry On Nurse (1959), then appeared in Carry On Teacher (1959), Carry On Constable (1960), Carry On Regardless (1961), Carry On Cleo (1964), Carry On Cowboy (1965), Carry On Screaming (1966), Carry On Doctor (1967), Carry On Up the Khyber (1968), and Carry On Camping (1969). On television she was Gran in Till Death Us Do Part, Mrs Bloomsbury-Barton in Worzel Gummidge, and Madge Hardcastle in As Time Goes By. She recorded singles and did pantomime.

Sims failed her first RADA audition with a Winnie the Pooh rendition, was admitted to its preparatory school, and succeeded on her fourth attempt.
