Plot summary
In 1750 England, crime is widespread, so King George II creates the Bow Street Runners, with Sergeant Jock Strapp and Captain Desmond Fancey serving under Sir Roger Daley. The Runners lay traps and tricks for highwaymen, but Richard "Big Dick" Turpin keeps evading them. He has robbed Sir Roger and his wife of money and clothing, which makes him their most wanted man, and Fancey is sent to work undercover and arrest him. Turpin rides with two partners, Harriet and Tom. One evening the three hold up a coach carrying Madame Desirée and her daughters, the Birds of Paradise, and Turpin gets the better of the Runners again. Fancey and Strapp then travel to Upper Dencher and confide their plan to the mild-mannered Reverend Flasher.
