Plot summary
David Somers worked for British intelligence in wartime and loses his job after a mission fails. The one post he can find is cataloging a butterfly collection at the home of Nicholas and Jess Fenton. There he grows close to Jess's niece, Sophie Malraux. A local gamekeeper, Hick, who was also Jess's lover, is murdered, and the police fix on Sophie, believing her fragile because her parents died, apparently by suicide, when she was six, a memory she has lost. Somers helps her slip away from arrest, and the two go on the run, with Somers drawing on his old service skills and contacts as he keeps the police and the SIS agent Willy Shepley off their trail.

- After producer Betty Box had signed all 48 contracts the bank required, James Laurie of the National Film Finance Corporation withdrew his company's money, and when Rank refused to help, Box borrowed the money against her own home.
- Betty Box said a crisis in the British film industry meant The Clouded Yellow was the only film being made in England in the first half of 1950.
- Some of the film was shot on the Liverpool Overhead Railway, which closed in 1956 and was later dismantled.
