Plot summary
Amy and Jim Preston live in a cramped flat with their teenage son Brian on a London housing estate. Brian has just started his first job. Amy rarely gets dressed and spends her days in her dressing gown, and she cannot keep the flat tidy or cook properly. Jim works with Georgie Harlow, who has become his lover. Georgie tells Jim she will break things off unless he divorces Amy and leaves his family, and Jim promises her he will go. When Amy learns what her husband has in mind, she is shocked and distraught, and vows to improve herself.
