Plot summary
Professor Emmanuel Hildern comes home to Victorian London in 1894 with an unusually large humanoid skeleton from an expedition to New Guinea, older and more advanced than any specimen recovered before, and he hopes it will win him the Richter Prize. Word arrives that his wife, long kept in an asylum, has died; the asylum is run by his half-brother James, who studied her and intends to publish the findings for the same prize, and who will no longer pay for Emmanuel's expeditions. Emmanuel finds that the skeleton grows flesh when water touches it, and that local myths tell of giants roused by rain. Convinced evil can be treated as an organism, he works on a serum.
