Plot summary
Dr. Thomas Bolton is a surgeon in London in the 1840s. He experiments with anesthetic gases so that operations can be done without pain. He gives a demonstration to a panel of fellow physicians, and the patient wakes up under the knife. Bolton leaves his position in disgrace. Opium is one of the ingredients in his experiments, and one evening it leaves him in a haze and takes him into The Seven Dials tavern, where his notebook of scientific work stays behind.
