Plot summary
Richard Fountain, an Oxford scholar of Greek mythology, travels to Greece to research Minoan rites. Word reaches England that he has fallen in with people connected to drugs, orgiastic rituals, and possibly a series of murders. Concerned for Richard, his almost-fiancée Penelope Goodrich and investigator Tony Seymour, along with student Bob Kirby and Major Derek Longbow, travel to Mykonos. Richard avoids them, but a note in his room points them to Hydra. At a monastery there, an abbot says he recently treated Richard for an ancient sickness connected to blood. Richard has been taken toward a nearby fort. The group finds him in a trance among the remnants of a ritual. The woman controlling him is Chriseis, a Greek vampire.
