Plot summary
Mary Hilton awaits execution for murder, held in the condemned cell of a British women's prison. The weeks that remain to her pass there, and her thoughts return again and again to the life she had before the killing, to the people who were part of it and to the events that ended in the crime for which she was sentenced. Whether the sentence will be carried out is the question that hangs over her last weeks. The crime at the center of the story is a murder that was planned in advance, and the film was made as a plea against capital punishment.

- The studio wanted Olivia de Havilland to star, but director J. Lee Thompson refused point blank, saying he would not make the film at all unless Diana Dors, who wanted the part, played it.
- The story resembled the Ruth Ellis case, but Diana Dors said it was not about her at all: the script was written two years before Ellis committed the murder, and Dors had met Ellis briefly on the 1951 film Lady Godiva Rides Again.
- An image of Diana Dors in a prison cell from the film was used on the cover of the Smiths' Singles album.
