Plot summary
Five strangers ride a lift down through a London office building and find themselves in a room below ground, the doors shut and no buttons to call the lift back. With nothing to do but wait, they pour drinks and trade stories about the dreams that return to them night after night. One man dreamed of following his sister to a strange town. Another cannot get his wife to keep house to his standard. A magician on holiday in India searches with his wife for new tricks. Two friends arrange an insurance scheme that requires one of them to be buried. A painter in Haiti learns that dealers sold his work for high prices after telling him it was worthless.

- None of the film's stories are actually from Vault of Horror comics: all but one appeared in Tales from the Crypt, the exception coming from Shock SuspenStories, and the comics' Vault Keeper character is left out of the film entirely.
- The 83-minute US theatrical PG re-release, cut down from the original 87-minute R-rated version, replaces some of the gorier scenes with still images in order to receive an MPAA PG rating.
- In "Bargain in Death", Maitland, played by Michael Craig, can be seen reading a copy of the novelisation of the earlier Amicus film Tales from the Crypt from 1972.

Questions have been raised about a missing scene in which the characters who walk to the graveyard are seen with dead, skeletal faces. No print containing it has ever surfaced, and it has been widely speculated that the image was just a promotional photo, since Curt Jurgens' character Sebastian is portrayed by a different actor in it.
