Big break
In 1954, radio producer Dennis Main Wilson spotted Williams in the West End, where he was playing the Dauphin in Bernard Shaw's St Joan. Main Wilson was putting together Hancock's Half Hour, a radio series with Tony Hancock.
A first
Williams was a regular presence in British movies across the late 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, appearing mostly in the Carry On series, which ran from 1958 to 1978 and was famous for its double entendre humor. No other actor appeared in the series more often than he did.
A change of course
Kenneth Williams served in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. That is where his interest in becoming an entertainer first began.
Beyond film
Williams narrated the BBC children's cartoon Willo the Wisp, which came out in 1981, and he also supplied every one of its voices.
Behind the camera
Kenneth Williams also wrote occasional Preview columns for Radio Times in the 1970s, in which he commented on BBC television and radio programs that were coming up.
First role
In 1948 Kenneth Williams started his professional career in repertory theater. He was disappointed that he did not become a serious dramatic actor.
