Plot summary
In a southern English suburb, Sid Abbott is a middle-aged homeowner who would rather stretch out on his settee than deal with his household. His wife, his work-shy son Mike and his fashion-conscious daughter Sally keep him from resting, and the sale of the house next door brings in the Baines family. Sid works as a salesman and is trying to land the Fizzo Drinks company. Sally turns up at the same firm with a group of environmentalists protesting non-disposable containers. Kate Baines takes a job beside Mike, and the two begin a romance. Sid buys a garden shed, where he sits and drinks with his friend Trevor Lewis. A book on distilling gives them the idea of building a still there, and the fact that Ronald Baines is a customs and excise officer makes the plan risky.

- A sequel to Bless This House was planned for 1976 but was immediately canceled after Sid James collapsed on stage at the Sunderland Empire Theatre and died of a heart attack on 26 April.
- Robin Stewart was replaced by Robin Askwith in the film version of Bless This House because Stewart had already been booked for the summer season on Bournemouth Pier and could not also appear; Stewart returned for the remainder of the six television series.
